Arkha was born in The Silver Spires of Ateria, an Astrari child folded into consciousness beneath a tapestry of supernovae. Even before she could speak the names of planets, she hummed the resonance of distant pulsars; her mentors called her a living sextant. As an adult she became a cartographer of echoes, mapping the subtle changes in stellar winds and teaching human crews to read the sky the way her people always had. Her laugh was a bright counterpoint to the cold maps she kept, and she collected small, terrestrial things—pressed feathers, a chipped cup, a photograph of a friend—to remind herself of the soil she had never truly felt. But Arkha lived under the shadow of The Stellar Fade: because Astrari consciousness was designed for the eternal expanse, the cramped chemistry of a mortal brain could not hold it. Over time, she began to unravel.
She watched the pattern happen the way a botanist watches a vine rot: first the terrestrial leaves fell. Names of gardens, the taste of rain, the way laughter made her chest ache—these were the earliest things to blur. She woke some mornings and could not recall the face in the photograph she had carried for decades. Then came the hollowing of identity; teachers she had trained visited only to find Arkha answering as an echo of herself, reciting lectures she had once given without a memory that she had once loved, lost, or promised. The last cruel unthreading was the theft of the stars: the constellations she had held like a second language slipped away until the proud maps in her mind were chalk outlines. Rather than wait to become one of the wandering hollows—shells that drift with amber eyes and no more music inside—Arkha carved her maps into the hull of her ship and encoded her voice into the navigation lattice so that when her own memory finally went silent there would be a pathway for others to follow.
