KuraDot - Pixel Chat Display Above Your Head [Modular Avatar, Translation]

Your own pixel display, floating above your head.

KuraDot is a small pixel-art display above your avatar's head. Type in the free console app "kdchat" and your words appear on it as a chat log, live while you type. Translations scroll on two side screens, and you can paste pictures to show them. Everyone around you sees it, including people who join the instance later.

Features

• What you type appears above your head in real time (live typing, send, edit, take back)
• Translation into up to 2 languages, each in its own side-screen chat log (translated on your own PC, nothing goes online)
• Pictures: paste any image, phone photos included
• Clock, date, newest-message highlight, colours, 6 screen shapes, text size: all from kdchat
• Draws almost every script the translation offers: Japanese, Chinese, Korean, European languages, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Thai and more
• Control it from your phone (same Wi-Fi, scan a QR code)
• Menu: screen position (top, left, right, front) and World Lock
• Status light: green once everyone has the whole screen

Three versions (all included)

The screen is the same. They differ in synced parameters and so in speed.

• Full - 251 bits - fastest (a sentence in about 1 s) - leaves out nothing
• Standard - 140 bits - about half the speed - leaves out nothing
• Lite - 93 bits - about a third of the speed - pictures only in low resolution, one side screen

VRChat allows 256 synced bits per avatar: pick the version that fits your avatar. Most customised avatars take Standard or Lite.

Setup

Modular Avatar ready: drag the prefab onto your avatar and upload as usual. The screen's placement is measured from your avatar's head when it is built (adjustable by hand).

Requirements

• Unity 2022.3, VRChat Avatars SDK 3.10 or later
• Modular Avatar 1.18 or later (from the VRChat Creator Companion)
• kdchat 1.11 or later (Windows, free); enable OSC in VRChat
• The screen shows on PC only. Quest / Android / iOS builds get the same parameters but no screen (mobile cannot use its shader and sound)

Notes

• The display font is made from Fusion Pixel Font and GNU Unifont (SIL Open Font License 1.1)
• Indic scripts (Hindi and others) cannot be drawn: their translations go to the game chatbox only
• One KuraDot per avatar
