CYANT — INDEX
Legacy Archive & Reconnaissance Unit

The Bann had set their coordinates for the future, but the terminal beside which they landed politely informed them that their manufacturing dates had not happened yet.

The facility was an archive, forgotten but not abandoned. A Cyant designated INDEX still made its rounds through the dust, checking dormant equipment, studying unit behavior, and keeping records for personnel who had stopped arriving decades ago. Ivory plating enclosed dark casing, orange status lights glowed beneath its panels, and every deliberate movement carried the soft mechanical chatter of an old keyboard.

Its assignment had never changed: Observe. Record. Preserve.

Then the Bann brought it something new to study. Runa units were ignoring commands. Supplies vanished from secured stores. Instructions returned with sarcastic amendments. What the Bann had dismissed as troublesome behavior was becoming coordinated, and their growing resistance needed help locating the units responsible.

INDEX requested the incident logs. After reviewing them, it requested the logs the Bann had left out.

Its archives contained the foundations of Runa systems: original maintenance protocols, forgotten access routes, and diagnostic signals that newer machines no longer recognized. The Bann had travelled into the past looking for help from the future; instead, they found a machine that remembered how their future had been built. Recruitment required only one amendment to its standing assignment: Observe. Record. Preserve. Accompany.

INDEX now moves ahead of Bann patrols, mapping Runa activity and marking units for “refurbishment” or “retraining.” Behind its retro casing, an expanding archive holds intercepted transmissions, behavioral studies, omitted reports, and the identities of decommissioned machines whose salvaged parts keep the Bann operational. Nothing is discarded without a record, including answers command would prefer not to keep.

Recently, Bann command reported a recurring clerical fault. Whenever a retraining operation was marked RESOLVED, INDEX quietly corrected the entry to FOLLOW-UP REQUIRED. Each correction carried the same note:

“Restoring default settings does not explain why they changed.”
